Both the E32 and the E38 7-Series can suffer from the dreaded 'shimmy'. This is wheel-wobble that usually first shows itself under braking, for instance, when coming off a motorway intersection and braking from high speed. The wobble can be felt through the steering-wheel but it usually disappears as the car speed reduces.
Sometimes this is all you ever get, but more usually you will start to get wobble as the car is accelerated through 50 - 60MPH. The more you drive the car the worse it will get. The wobble is quite often accompanied by tram lining and a general feeling of imprecision from the steering in general.
The shimmies are often an indication of general wear in the steering system and suspension, the BMW E38 has a great deal of weight over the front wheels, especially when braking. It also seems to have a resonant frequency that occurs between 50 and 60 MPH, if there is any weakness it is at this speed where the problems will occur.
Dirk Müller (D)/Fredrik Ekblom (S) secured the first victory for the new GT car in Jarama after the two BMW M3 GTRs started from the front row of the GT grid. JJ Lehto (FIN)/Jörg Müller (D) came second in the GT class with the sister car. The second round of the European Le Mans Series, a two-hour, 45 minute event, took place on the former Grand Prix track of Jarama, Spain.
At the start JJ Lehto took the lead from pole sitter Dirk Müller, but let him pass by again in lap 7 of 102. Due to improved fuel consumption of the V8 both cars completed the event with just one pit stop. JJ Lehto handed his car to Jörg after 50 laps and one lap later Dirk handed over to Fredrik.
Something funny to cheer you up today. Part of the VisualArt and related to BMW’s “Joy” campaign, a sketch has emerged on the internet and it is quite funny. The new design project initiated by BMW Romania plans to stimulate the creativity of several artists in creating 2D/3D designs that revolve around the Joy marketing campaign. While the sketch is still being considered work in progress, we couldn’t wait to share it with you and as soon as the final design is completed, we’ll make sure to post it.
The facelifted BMW X5 model will launch in April 2010, but in the mean time, several prototypes are being tested around the Spartanburg Plant. With the risk of repeating ourselves, let’s recap some of the changes that will take place in the Life Cycle Impulse X5. Most of the obvious changes in this LCI model are noticeable at the front-end where the X6-style headlights will replace the current ones. In these spy shots, a new set of signal indicators can be seen, similar to the ones found on the 3 Series Sedan facelifted model.
When it comes to viral and teaser videos, MINI takes the crown. Their marketing department outdoes themselves each time and some of their videos achieve the popular status on Youtube in no time. Their latest creative video has more of a teaser flavor and it is meant to spark interest and build anxiety prior to the Frankfurt Auto Show which debuts next week; a motor show where BMW and MINI will lead with an impressive line of new and existing vehicles.
Following the sedan’s footsteps, the already perfectly executed 3-Series Coupe model will receive a mid-cycle facelift early next year. From the streets of Munich, the fellows at MotorAuthority are bringing us some latest spy shots of a prototype spotted during testing. The Coupe and Convertible models will receive new headlights and taillights treatment, along with revised/redesigned front and rear bumpers, and new side skirts. A new set of oversized and less sleek side mirrors are being tested on the current prototype.
While not available for the U.S. market, we believe our European readers will enjoy to read about the latest BMW Performance Kit available for some of the european diesel engines. The BMW 120d and 320d vehicles are getting a power boost thanks to this latest kit. Both cars are powered by the N47 engine which in “standard” format produces 177 horsepower and 350Nm of torque. The Performance Kit gives the engine a 20 horsepower upgrade along with 40Nm of torque, for a total of 197 horsepower and 390Nm. Despite the power increase, BMW says that fuel consumption average remains unchanged.
