The debut has taken place in September, 1995 on the Frankfurt motor show new, already the fourth, generation of 5 series BMW - E39. Aggressive, energetic style BMW E39 has deserved many flatter responses on both sides of Atlantic ocean.

The forward headlights hidden under narrow fairing, elegant back part with a powerful rack and, certainly, radiator lattices speak firm "nostrils" about character of the automobile. E39 body became little bit more - on 55 mm at length, on 23 in height and 49 at width, that, together with increase in wheel base at 70 mm, has provided to it shorter body overhang. Plus to everything, has considerably added a body in rigidity, it has raised not only safety, but also has improved controllability. Nevertheless it is not become heavier, though has remained steel.

Aluminium is widely introduced into a design of a suspension bracket. Directing levers, steering drafts are made of it, stamped underframes of forward and back suspension brackets, support of amortisation racks. Besides it, "aluminium" external pipes of shock-absorbers, brake supports and, certainly, wheel disks have undergone. The weight of a suspension bracket has decreased for 36 % and as consequence, work and comfort of this has improved.

5 series E39 the Design of a back suspension bracket, with "taxiing up" action of back wheels, brings to perfection magnificent behaviour of the automobile on road.

The interior of E39 is sustained in traditional style. The place of the driver is a sample of ergonomics. The comfort of passengers on a back seat is promoted by increase in wheel base.

Since spring of 1997 the production program has added new Touring which on 90 mm is longer and on 100 kg it is heavier than a sedan. It has good capacity and keeps excellent qualities of a sedan. The scale of engines for Touring is similar those at a sedan. The list of standard equipment has been added with two lateral pillows of safety.

5 series E39 At creation of the passenger-and-freight version of the automobile, perhaps more attention were given preservation of dynamic characteristics and individuality of external shape. 5 Touring - one of few examples European Touring where the luggage carrier does not look "makeweight", and is a harmonious part of the automobile. The pursuit of style has a little worsened parameters of a bootcanor - the volume of it is equal to only 410 litres against 600 litres at the competitor, a Mercedes of E-class T. The automobile is completed both mechanical, and an automatic check point.

5 series E39 540i Touring it is considered the most high-speed serial Touring planets.

For the first time on serial E39 model capacity of the engine has reached 400 h.p., and dynamic qualities even became better, than at M3 - 5,3 with up to 100 km/h. M5 it is completed only 6 step transmission.


Interior BMW of 5 series E39 In 1999 externally automobiles have not changed, and under cowls there were main recesses: 6-cylinder motors have received management of both cam-shafts of system Double-VANOS, 8-cylinder - system VANOS for inlet valves and two-step catalytic neutralizers of the fulfilled gases, allowed to meet requirements Euro 42005 years. Besides decrease in toxicity, the increase in the twisting moment is achieved and fuel profitability has raised.

One more novelty - a 184-strong diesel engine with the unshared chamber of combustion, system of injection CommonRail, a turbo-supercharging and intermediate cooling of air on model BMW 530d. The automobile is capable to develop 225 km/h and to spend in a standard country cycle less than 6l/100 km. Despite of the full superiority of a new diesel engine, manufacture of old (BMW 525tds) some time proceeded still.

Lobbies of sitting 5 series E39 In the middle of July 1999 BMW has asked the European structures to resolve models E39 530d and E39 525tds for work in a taxi! It has taken place after leaving from BMW Pishetstridera which flatly refused to market BMW to taxi drivers, despite of repeated references of many trade unions of taxi drivers to bavarians with the request to sell it E39 5-th series with the newest turbodiesels.

At the end of 1999 on the Russian roads first sedans E39 523i and BMW E39 528i, collected on the enterprise of joint-stock company " Author" in the Kaliningrad area have appeared.

In the beginning of 2000 has appeared inexpensive 520d E39 with the 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine of direct injection for the first time tested on "three" 320d. Its capacities (136 h.p.) quite suffice, that even 1,6-ton 5-th Touring to disperse from a place up to 100 km/h for 10,9 with. In comparison with petrol E39 520i Touring, the average charge of fuel of a novelty is reduced approximately on third.

More powerful E39 525d has replaced the progenitrix 525tds with a 143-strong diesel engine. The new 2,5-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine of direct injection with a turbo-supercharging is equipped with system of submission of fuel Common Rail and develops 163 h.p.

Interior 5 series E39 complete sets include whole "bouquet" of systems of active safety: antiblocking brake system, ASC+T (the automatic control of stability over a regulator of traction force), DSC III (system of dynamic stabilization of movement) and DBC (dynamic stabilization of distribution of brake forces). Under the order such "options", as pneumoracks of the back suspension bracket, full "electropackage" with memory on installation of a driver's seat, a steering wheel and mirrors of a back kind, double lateral glasses, the monitoring system of pressure of air in trunks (RDC) are possible, having warmed up a steering wheel, automatic climatic installation with the control of impurity of external air (AUC), etc. In 2000 the driver's seat of so-called active type which before was offered only by machines of 7-th series has appeared also.

In the autumn of 2000 the first modernization of E39 models of 5-th series has taken place. Externally updated "five" is easily recognized on transparent blocks - headlights with round yellow indexes BMW of 5 series E39 and to a new forward spoiler with round antifog headlights. However the main changes are latent inside - at once three new engines M54 for models E39 520i, E39 525i and E39 530i here have appeared. All of them line, 6-cylinder, with systems Double-VANOS and with changeable rise of inlet valves. The first engine for E39 BMW 520i, is created on the basis of the old 2-liter unit. The increase in a course of the piston with 66 up to 72 mm, has allowed to increase working volume with 1991 up to 2171 sm3 and the maximal capacity with 150 up to 170 h.p. at 6250 rev/min. The second engine is a former 2,5-liter unit of model E39 523i, but in the modernized variant developing any more 170, and 192 h.p. (an index 523i have replaced on correct 525i). The third engine for BMW 530i, for the first time, in the middle of 2000, has appeared on models of 3-rd series is a 3-liter engine with impressive capacity in 231 h.p.
