Tuning BMW 5 series E39 - e39 5 series modified
This time we shall taste two automobiles BMW E39 5 series. White E39 540i - almost standard bavarian distinguished from a factory complete set only by 18-inch wheels and wide trunks Bridgestone S-02. However (it is success!), precisely same cost and on the silvery automobile. But here from a production version it is more than differences - besides the modified motor and the increased transfer attitude of the main pair in transmission, it have supplied with short both more rigid springs and corresponding shock-absorbers, in front and on each side the bodies painted color spoilers flaunt. And the name... BMW 5 series E39 AMSport V8 4,7 - it about something speaks you? Most soon - is not present.
But - get used! Yes, in Germany sense in beer and shnaps know. And in speeding up of motors BMW are engaged from time immemorial. But also in Russia now there is domestic a tuning of studio with the loud name Autohouse Motor Sport, among the first undertaken for serious completion of foreign cars.
AMSport - not that other, as division of the official Russian dealer of the Bavarian company, firms the Autohouse. Having undertaken so uneasy business as completion of automobiles BMW, experts of the Autohouse did not begin to force an open door, and have taken advantage of an extensive database accessible to them about factory spare parts and special details, in a plenty offered by German firms - suppliers and tuning of studio. For example, it is known, that aluminium blocks of engines E39 BMW 5 series with nikasil a covering of cylinders boring work are not subject.
But for this reason specially for tuning blocks with the increased diameter of cylinders are issued by the firm - supplier of these details small series, and other enterprise (and not one) makes cranked shaft with the increased course of the piston. Precisely as there is a choice of non-standard cam-shafts, blocks of management of the engine, springs of a suspension bracket, shock-absorbers... Actually the role of the person making E39 tuning is reduced to competent selection of components for tuning the motor, a suspension bracket and transmission and to careful assembly.
So the V-shaped eight-cylinder engine of silvery 5 series (E39) has been prepared. Others the block of cylinders and a cranked shaft, other rods, cam-shafts with the changed form of cams and the oil pump with the increased productivity. Actually, the word "modified" here is not absolutely pertinent: it is practically new motor where from initial have remained only the head of the block and canopies. Completes a picture the reconstructed block of management of ignition and injection of fuel.
Result - superfluous 232 "cubes" of working volume for which together with changes in phases gas distribution, ignition, injection and the "short" transfer relation of the main pair certain German tuning of studio (prepared on this compounding) promises the motor an essential increase in 56 l. With. Capacities and 50 Nanometers of the twisting moment.
However, similar completion of the E39 motor with use of the new block is stipulated and for other engines: the 1,6-liter motor can be altered in two-liter, "six" in working volume of 2,8 litres - in 3,2-liter, etc. Certainly, such work will cost dearly, in 20-30 thousand DM. But interested persons already were found. For example, the owner of newcomer BMW E39 528i, on the big speed flown in a deep pool, has preferred such tuning to repair of the engine. And all the matter is that when water has got in an inlet collector and in cylinders, was so-called hydroimpact: trying to compress an incompressible liquid, the rod was bent and has broken away a piece of the block in one of cylinders.
And as cost of usual completion with inevitable in this case replacement of the block of cylinders appeared to approximately equal price of the modified 3,2-liter engine the owner has chosen last variant.
Well, and BMW 5-th series E39 on which it is necessary us a way on autorange Dmitrovsky, is most powerful "five" of that it is possible to buy now in Russia. In fact M5 yet is not issued!
TEST - BMW 5-SERIES E39 IN CITY STREETS
We go on streets on two 5 series E39 - charged and standard.
Perhaps, diameter of a rudder trim with a skin could be smaller, and jet action at the big corners of its turn - is more. Though... It is necessary to press a pedal of gas, and all trifles are instantly forgotten, and the soul starts to sing in a unison with an inimitable voice of the Bavarian motor in which in the incomprehensible image have merged also the deep velvet timbre peculiar to V-shaped "eight", and high furious notes of the engine of a superbike or the Formula. And soft, powerful acceleration - as if exciting drink which is to be gulped.
But if and further to compare our test to tasting we begin with warm-up, filtering on a droplet cold beer. Alas, to make a large drink and to satisfy thirst it is impossible - in an intensive city stream magnificent installed power per employee of our machines remains unclaimed. The first transfer, the second - also it is possible to include safely the sixth, easy to slide in a stream, not being switched even then when all around nervously search for third transfer. It is difficult for us to find stone jungle equal on asphalt tracks.
The silvery E39 automobile already now declares the big traction opportunities - more abruptly and is more sympathetic responds to moving of a pedal of an accelerator, forcing passengers to throw back heads back at intensive dispersal (as if in an impulse of pride) and to nod at sharp dump of gas. The standard white machine is softer in the responses to change of submission of fuel.
More rigid and more shortcourse a suspension bracket tuning of the machine transfers such driving even worse. On large potholes the driver jumps up above a seat, keeping exclusively for a rudder (try to register a trajectory at such jolting!). It is very a pity, but unsatisfactory smoothness of a course simply beats off desire quickly to call in in turns. In addition E39 system ASC perceives constants of posting of driving wheels as a signal to action and itself resets gas, causing unpleasant twitchings of the automobile. The standard machine too is hung out, but less often and less appreciablly. Well though, that system ASC here disconnected, and excellent coupling properties of trunks allow to address freely with a pedal of gas and without this system.
But when the twisting site of the equal line comes across, both 5 series E39 prove to the full. The minimal delays in responses to actions by sharp enough, sensitive rudder - in all the care of designers of drivers with sports character is shown. And the modified machine enters in a bend, and jet action on a rudder here more "transparent", distinct better. Beauty!
Slightly was late - and equal intensive dispersal on the first and second transfers is stopped by intervention of the terminator of revolutions, and on the modified automobile it occurs faster. But the "short" E39 transmission makes itself felt not only prompter set of revolutions: at the same speeds the driver chooses on transfer above, than on "standard", and use of the fifth becomes inexpedient.
After the fourth transfer the sixth at once is asked!
And controllability...
We move to a line where on range race-ring races are carried out. Where it is possible to feel advantage from a low rigid suspension bracket together with the best dynamics! The standard automobile in each turn emphasizes character of the big solid sedan appropriate to a rank, softly starts to slide outside of turn by forward wheels, softly leaves inside at dump of gas. It as if insures the driver against serious mistakes, but at attempts to start E39 machine in controlled drift resists that there are forces. First under draft continues to slip out outside, and then as if recollects about a back drive and with delay starts to slide back wheels, being screwed inside of a bend.
And the silvery 5 series E39 as if has forgotten about the solid image. We fly up to turn, and BMW easily and willingly enters in a bend. And now - full gas! The automobile is exact it and waits, smoothly, but without the slightest indecision leaving in drift. We compensate its rotation of a rudder, gas is not dumped. And, sliding all four wheels, with an intensive set of speed the machine leaves turn. Ahead - new turn. Time to dump gas, "to catch" the necessary phase of fluctuation of the machine and to start it in following a bend...
Intoxication from possession by fine machine on a ring line has reached the apogee.
But then, alas, has started moving downwards.
TEST - BMW 5-SERIES E39 ON ROAD DINAMOMETRICHESKOJ
Now we on a straight line as to road, and to both machines the special measuring equipment is established. First with a an indistinct powerful rumble by us the white drop, then with louder and hysterical noise - silvery is carried by. With impatience we develop listings results of measurements and...
Dry figures operate on us, as if sobering cold souls. Well, we shall take into account, that tuning the machine yet run-in, and at standard at run in 17000 kms there are problems with coupling. But why so it is godless, on 20-30 km/h (!) the speedmeter in the machine the "modified" combination devices established on tuning with dark blue dials tells lies?
How happened, what at a real 5 BMW E39 maximum in 244 km/h the speedmeter has shown exactly promised German tuning by masters of 274 km/h? And it that an error of a E39 series speedmeter on the standard automobile (with the same trunks!) was in allowable limits?
To these discrepancies between the specified figures and results of measurements we see some explanations, for example, that, probably, the program of E39 block of management has been written by the engine (which processes for a speedmeter signals from gauges of number of revolutions of wheels) for other trunks. And decrease in the maximal speed was affected with a forward spoiler, as indirect acknowledgement to that strong noise could serve at arrivals of the silvery machine. But, on the other hand, start since speed of 180 km/h (the resistance to movement less, the start there is more) at it more, than at "standard". And why E39 time of dispersal " from zero up to hundred " has turned out for one and a half seconds more?..
THE PURPOSE AND COST OF TUNING BMW 5-SERIES E39
We yet do not know exact answers. One is clearly. More rigid suspension bracket, the "short" transmission and (probably) put spurs motor have most brightly revealed on a sports ring line in modes which at usual driving are hardly comprehensible, and to not so skilled drivers are simply dangerous. Where those roads on which it is possible to quilt in "ring" style?
At the same time the increased rigidity and the reduced course of a suspension bracket have played a malicious joke with smoothness of a course and controllability, having complicated movement on the Russian roads to high speeds. And it that by the machine there was softest of sports sets of suspension bracket M-Technik.
And still. E39 BMW 540i in a standard complete set there is $78000, and a silvery automobile - $95000. But demand for such "individualized" machines, even on $17000 is more dear than "standard", is, so, will be both the offer. And the serious engineering approach of experts of the Autohouse to tuning allows to hope, that their machines of times from time to become will be faster and better. Give the God to them to follow " a rule of increase of degree ".
And can be, all is much easier? And the speedmeter - bootlicker that the girl a beside whispered is necessary for much only: " As quickly you go... "
