BMW refers to their BMW X6 as a "sports activity coupe". The BMW X6 represents a marriage between the sport utility SUV with the profile of a sport coupe.

When many people are asked point blank if the BMW X6 is beautiful few reply affirmatively. In effect, a few reviewers consider the car to be a ground breaking vehicle or to possess any sort of vehicle fashion statement at all. Many merely consider it a glorified five door hatchback.

When viewing the front of the car there can be no mistaking that it is a BMW with its big twin kidney grille as well as the fighter jet type air intakes located on each of the corners. Its long roof line seems to go forever which tends to give the BMW X6 a hatchback type of look. Most test driver's remark that the looks of this car are promising however they are quick to point out that these same looks are flawed. An example being the large rear end of the vehicle. The test drives however have concluded that the BMW X6 has an abundance of power and handles like a dream machine. In fact, many people were surprised to find an SUV which handles as well as the BMW X6 does.

The interior of this car is designed in a more traditional BMW fashion. It sports an X5 style dash with trim completed in a dark style with lots of controls and buttons to impress most drivers. BMW's usual iDrive takes care of the climate as well as the entertainment functions within the car. Some may condemn the center consol as being much too high and providing the passengers with the feel of being in an small enclosed cockpit which readily hinders those of a claustrophobic tendency.

The BMW X6 for 2009 will come in several versions such as the XDrive 35i which is powered by the 306 horse power 3.0 liter turbocharged six cylinder and the XDrive 50i with its 400 horsepower 4.4 liter turbocharged V-8. In both versions you will find the automatic six speed transmission since it is the only option you can get.

The V-8 will deliver a 0-60 in 5.4 seconds with a top speed approaching 155 mph. The inline six cylinders however appears to be a bit livelier in that it does not weigh down the BMW X6's front end as badly and does not suffer the turbo lag found in the larger engine. It performs well at 60 mph in 6.5 seconds with a top speed of around 149 mph.
