BMW X6 CrossoverThe rising cost of fuel along with the rising popularity of "going green" has caused even the most affluent car shopper to start paying attention to the fuel economy rating of their new vehicles. The Auto industry has responding by cutting back at their production of overly huge SUV and rolling out a new line of "crossover" vehicles, Crossover vehicles are essentially coup bodies slapped onto the chassis of an SUV, These new crossover coups allow for greater gas mileage while still maintaining the power and control of a sport utility vehicle. Many people like the room these new crossovers breeds have when compared to a car, however, they are forced to deal with the sometimes-awkward looking design features that come about when engineers decide to play Frankenstein. High-end car manufacturers have struggled to design a crossover that blends a defining, sophisticated look of a sporty coup with the power and handling of a S.U.V. BMW's X6 crossover is the latest attempt at such a creation.

The BMW X6 with its bold design and new twin turbo fuel injected V8, is termed a "Sport Activity Coupe." It looks kind of like a pumped up sports car on steroids. The design of the upper half of X6 is slick and streamlined with a roof that dramatically dips down to meet with the high back end, giving the car an almost hatchback look. The Front of the X6 sports twin kidney girls and inset headlamps along with a pair of trendy fog lamps near the bottom. The design concept has been hailed by some critics as "Ground Breaking" and dripping with machismo" while others have called the hatchback style, "unique at best, a little too forced at worst."

Well, the debates rages on over the car's overall look, most critics tend to give praise over the X6's handling and performance. The new turbocharged V8 that the range topping X6 xDrive50i comes with puts out 407 horsepower at 5500 rpm and can go 0-60 in 5.4 seconds (on paper at least). All this, and it gets 19 miles to the gallon too. There is also a 3.0-liter, 306-liter, inline six available to those who want it. Both engines perform well and give this car the oomph that drivers of these types of vehicles are expecting. The Dynamic Performance control system, which gives power to individual wheels when it is needed, allows for great control and handling.

The BMW X6 crossover is a car that has the performance and safety capabilities of a sport utility vehicle and the streamlined look of a sports coup. While some may shudder when they look at the X6, others see it as the future of car production. As gas prices continue to soar, and consumers keep demanding that they get their cake and get to eat it too, expect more luxury crossover cars like the BMW X6 to start rolling off the assembly line.
